Flex Rider Etiquette

We are working to build a community where riders and drivers have the confidence in sharing rides with fellow passengers who are friendly, trustworthy, respectful, and responsible. Use common sense in your actions and interactions with your fellow passengers. A vanpool is a bit different than the bus. If you ride with the same group often, ask if they have any group guidelines to be aware of. Maybe they share donuts on Fridays!

After You Book Your Ride

  • If you must cancel, do it as early as possible.
  • Check out information on the pickup location in the app. Use the map link to see directions. If this is the first time you’re getting on this vanpool, message the vanpool driver with any specific questions you may have.
  • Plan on how you’ll get to the stop on time. Will you walk or will you drive to a nearby location that has parking?
  • Not every vanpool has storage for bags or other items. A good rule of thumb is to bring only what could fit comfortably on your lap.

At The Time Of Your Ride

  • Show up at your pickup location before your driver arrives. Vanpools usually do not wait. If they don’t see you, you may miss the ride.
  • When approaching the van, reconfirm the vehicle information in the app and get the driver’s attention. Present the Upcoming Rides screen to show your booked ride. The driver may have additional instructions – for instance, to show your employer badge. Follow driver instructions and board the available seat.
  • You may be at a crowded spot and the driver may not easily see you so be prepared to draw attention to yourself. We would hate for you to miss your ride because the driver did not see you!
  • Vans typically have a strict no food and no smoking policy. When in doubt, ask the driver and follow driver instructions.

When You Are Riding In The Van

  • Check with the driver or other riders for any seating arrangements. Sometimes if there are multiple drop-offs, seats may be filled based on who gets off first. Make the ride comfortable and pleasant for all.
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
  • If you need to make or receive calls, keep them brief and don’t be loud.
  • Some groups are quiet vans while others are quite talkative (but they may have a “no work discussion” policy). It is a good idea on first time rides to follow the lead of the group.

After Your Ride Ends

  • Remember to take anything with you (crumpled pieces of paper included) that you bring into the van. Make sure the van is in the same state when you leave as it was when you entered.
